The Baby Whisperer

Apart from the fact that I’m long overdue for a decent ‘Andrew’ post, I’m not sure that I’ve actually written any ‘Parenting for Dummies’ posts yet. So… here goes!

I discovered quite a while ago that Andrew loves it when I whisper in his ear.  He’ll just sit there with his head pressed against up against my face for ages if I start whispering.  I don’t even necessarily have to say anything in particular, either, although I tend to whisper ‘secret, secret, secret’ over and over which seems to work pretty well.

I guess I’ve been doing this on and off for a while now (6 months?) just as something to keep him amused for five minutes, but realised last night that it’s a great way to calm him down if he’s getting cranky.

We had just finished Andrew’s bath, had dried him off and finished brushing his teeth.  When I say brushing it’s more like he’s chewing on his toothbrush, but it’s a start I guess.  After he’d finished rinsing his mouth by drinking a little bit of water out of his Thomas cup I started to try to lay him down to put his nappy on and get him ready for bed.  As soon as I started tipping him back, Andrew started arching his back and complaining.  I’m not sure why I did it, but I just leaned over and started whispering ‘calm down, mister’ repeatedly into his ear.  As soon as I started he quietened down, stuck his fingers in his mouth, started sucking and relaxed.  He was pretty much fine after that.

We tried it again tonight after his bath and it worked then too.  I had just laid him down to put on his nappy and he started getting cranky again.  This time Jules whispered in his ear and he calmed down so much he nearly fell asleep on the change table!  Impressive!

I suppose we shouldn’t use this all the time, but it seems to work pretty well as a ‘secret weapon’ against potential tantrums.  I’d be interested to see how well it works if Andrew gets really worked up first, but it’s probably a good idea if I don’t initiate that one.

Big Announcement

Okay, by now this probably isn’t such a huge announcement, but I figure better late than never.

That’s right, Jules is pregnant again with our second child. The latest due date is the 21st of September, but of course that is always more of a guideline than anything else.

I must say that I’m a little calmer about the whole fatherhood thing (I’ve had a while to get used to it I guess) but the fact that Jules got pregnant a little earlier than expected has both of us a little nervous. Still, there will be about 2 years between Andrew and his little sister/brother (or is that brother/sister?) which is a pretty good gap.

That brings me onto one of the big questions – are we going to find out the sex of the baby? Well, the jury is still out on that one, but at this stage we’re leaning towards not finding out. People keep telling us it’s good to have a surprise, and given that we’re 90% prepared whatever we end up with we might just leave finding out until “B-day”.

Jules has been travelling fairly well so far. As last time she hasn’t really suffered from morning sickness which is a huge bonus.

The biggest change this time around is having to go through it all with a toddler in-tow. If either of us isn’t feeling 100%, the other one still has Andrew to contend with. Having suffered a bout of gastro a couple of weeks ago, Jules was faced with the fun job of entertaining Andrew by herself all weekend on top of all the ‘usual’ pregnancy-related stuff.

Not sure if Andrew quite understands what’s happening yet, but we have been trying to explain that Mummy has a baby in her tummy. He generally gives her tummy a pat and a kiss, but he tends to do that anyway.

What else? The next major event will be Jules’ scan next week. That’s the one where we are able to find out the sex of the baby if we want. I guess we have between now and then to decide which way we’ll go.

Better go. Sorry for the long break between posts. I’ll have to write some more soon to fill you in on what life’s been like with the little bloke. I might even be able to persuade Jules to post to the new blog (speaking of which, what do you think?)

Andrew talks to his Grandparents

Here’s a cute clip of Andrew that Julia took this morning (while I was lucky enough to have a sleep-in).

Sometimes Andrew tries really hard to repeat what you’re asking him to say, and this morning he was particularly accommodating. Of course, some days all he’ll say is “Mama!”. 🙂

P.S. I promise there will be an update soon. A long overdue announcement, for a start!
