Blogging for Dummies

From my vast experience as a blogger I think I can comfortably say that the number one rule of blogging is to try and actually update your blog every now and then. It’s also good to try and blog close to major events so that you’ve got a chance of remembering what happened, too.

Having imparted that little piece of wisdom, I’ll now try and give you a quick run-down on what’s been going on in Casa Del Beckitt over the last few weeks…

Scans

Not long after returning from our Fiji trip we went to the hospital for Julia’s second official scan (not counting the unscheduled one a couple of months ago). It’s great to see some live footage of B – the best part has got to be when they show you the heartbeat. B was being pretty uncooperative this time, but still looking pretty cute for a 19-week old fetus! We were also able to find out the sex at that time, too, so for those of you who want to know (and haven’t looked at Julia’s site yet) then click here. Please try and keep this to yourself, though, unless you know that the other person definitely knows the sex!

House Guests

Later that week, we had a few house guests come to stay. Julia’s Dad, Ian, and our mates from Tassie Greg & Mel (+ their two little ‘uns, Bailey and Jaime). It was great to catch up with Greg and Mel (although my liver may disagree slightly on that point!) and to catch up with Dad D’Emden. Especially as he was able to help us out with a whole bunch of stuff that we wanted to do before the baby arrives. Julia’s blog has a list of stuff that he kept himself busy with for the week and a half that he was here (not really sure how he fitted it all in) and I’d like to say what a great help it was. Again, my liver was slightly less pleased with the week’s events, but you can’t have everything.

Ikea

Of course, we can hardly last a couple of months without visiting Ikea and we nearly always end up buying something while we’re there. This time we actually went with some sort-of plan, and came home with a grand total of:

  • one set of drawers (to match the Magiker cabinets in the kitchen)
  • one set of shelves to use in the nursery built-in (to make up for the distinct lack of shelving in there)
  • one coffee table
  • one table lamp for aforementioned coffee table

Knowing me, I’ve probably missed something in that list. Oh well, I’ll just put it down to the stress of being a father. Well, of almost being a father.

Reading

I’ve read a couple of good ‘Fathering’ books recently, too. ‘So You’re Going to Be A Dad’ by Peter Downey was a very insightful read, and quite informative too (thanks for the lend, Sven). I highly recommend that one for any dads-to-be if they’re after some practical advice. ‘Fatherhood’ by Bill Cosby was also a fun read, but perhaps slightly less practical 😉

Star Wars

No baby blog would be complete without a Star Wars story, so I thought I’d boast about my recently completed Han Solo costume that was thrown together for Matt’s birthday party the weekend before last.

Well, they say a picture’s worth a thousand words, so this one’s got to be worth at least a few hundred:

Some quick notes: the vest and gumboots are the only items that haven’t been modified in some way. I took all the buttons and cuffs off the shirt, then used some iron-on stuff (I believe that’s the technical term) to ‘hem’ the sleeves and seal the front. I used the same iron-on stuff to put the ‘Corellian Blood Stripes’ down the leg. There are also about two-hundred horizontal black lines on that red ribbon to give the effect of a couple of horizontal red stripes. Make sense? I made the gunbelt (plus silver buckle) from scratch, and the blaster was fashioned from an old toy gun with some assistance from Julia’s Dad.

I think that’s probably enough for now. I plan on writing a bit about what’s been happening with my job, but will do so in my next post.
